Previously known as the Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana, it is now known as the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana or the PMMVY.

Maternity issues were alarmingly high in India in the past couple of years. In order to ensure the safety of mothers and newborns, the Government put this maternity program in place.

Origins

It started in 2016 and is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. This program is based on the conditional transfer scheme for pregnant and lactating women of 19 years of age and above for the first live birth.

Benefits under the PMMVY

This scheme provides partial wage compensation to women for daily wage loss during childbirth and childcare. It aims to provide conditions for safe delivery and providing good nutrition to the mother and the child. In 2013, understanding the scope of work involved, the PMMVY was brought under the National Food Security Act, 2013.

Under this Act, the main objective is to implement the provision of cash maternity benefit of ₹6,000/-

This Sarkari yojana came as a huge sigh of relief to working women who rely on daily wages for their sustenance.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi addressed maternity issues in his 2017 New Year’s Eve Speech and announced this scheme which is meant to cover over 650 districts of the country.

In summary

The Mother who needs to avail of this scheme primarily needs to register herself at the nearest Anganwadi Center within four months of Conception. She would need to attend at least one prenatal care session and has to take iron-folic acid tablets and TT (Tetanus) injection.

She would also have to attend at least one counseling session at AWC or any healthcare center.

With this Sarkari Yojana in place, the cases of mothers dying during childbirth have drastically witnessed a plunge, and healthcare during crucial stages of mother and child’s healthcare has been looked after.
