The fund for the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana comes from the District Mineral Foundation (DMF). The DMF was formed under The Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015. A certain percentage of lease amounts collected from the mining companies form a major portion of the DMF fund.

It has been mentioned that 60% of the fund has to be utilized in social welfare activities for the affected people of the affected areas. Health, education, vocational skill, sanitization, and preservation of the environment are some of the welfare activities implemented under this scheme.

Infrastructure developmental projects like road constructions, building bridges, are also done under the PMKKKY scheme. PMKKKY also funds developmental projects on irrigation, an alternate source of energy, and watershed development.
