Launched in the financial year 2014–2015, National Livestock Mission (NLM) aims at qualitative and quantitative improvement in livestock production and respective systems and capacity building of stakeholders. The scheme is implemented with a vision of sustainable growth and development of the livestock sector.
NLM is an implementation of the sub-scheme of the White Revolution (Rashtriya Pashudhan Vikas Yojana).
Objectives
The schemes encompass multiple objectives as follows:
- Enhancing availability and quality of feed and fodder
- Increasing production and ensuring the quality of fodder and seeds by incorporating effective feed production chain that actively involves farmers
- Collaborating with dairy or farmer cooperatives, seed-related organizations, and private sector enterprises
- Instituting convergence and energy in programs for sustainable development
- Fostering skill-based training and technologies for decreasing production cost
- Conducting and promoting initiatives for conservation and genetic enhancement of indigenous livestock breeds
- Curing and preventing animal diseases and pollution
Design
NLM is organized into four sub-missions:
- Sub-mission on livestock development
This sub-mission includes productivity improvement, entrepreneurship development, and employment opportunities, reforming state farm infrastructure through modernization, automation, biosafety, and conservation of threatened breeds.
- Sub-mission on pig development in the north-eastern region
This sub-mission synergizes R&D through interventions for pig development in the north-eastern region and focuses on genetic improvement, health benefits, and postharvest operations.
- Sub-mission on feed and fodder development
The sub-mission addresses issues related to the scarcity of animal feed resources and works toward making livestock sector a competitive enterprise of India.
- Sub-mission on skill development, technology transfer, and extension
The sub-mission aims to develop, adopt, and adapt technologies, including field demonstration. Farmers do not easily adapt to technologies and new research methods. For implementing these technologies and practices, a link between stakeholders, and this scheme enables better outreach programs.
