Launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in 2015, Suryamitra Skill Development Program is implemented by The National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and various State Nodal Agencies. Through this scheme, India is promoting solar energy sector of the country.

Objectives

Launched under National Solar Mission to strengthen the sector, Suryamitra Skill Development Program aims to achieve the “Skilling India” target by creating skilled and fully trained manpower for multiple service sectors and manufacturing industries. These professionals, i.e., Suryamitras, would be working in the field of deployment, operation, maintenance, sales, and servicing of various devices operating on renewable energy.

Till 2020, the scheme would have the following objectives:

  1. Imparting skills and knowledge to the youth
  2. Promote employment and entrepreneurship in the field of the solar power energy sector
  3. Training the youth for operation, management, and maintenance of the devices
  4. Ultimately, promoting “Make in India” scheme of the government of India

Eligibility criteria

Candidates registering for Suryamitra Skill Development Program should be over 18 years old. In terms of academic requirements, candidates should be minimum 10th pass or equivalent and ITI in Electronics, Mechanical, or equivalent. Nevertheless, candidates with a diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, and Electronics are given preference.

There are special benefits for SC/STs, unemployed candidates, women, and people coming from rural areas.

Of note, candidates with higher qualification are not eligible for the scheme.

Benefits

The scheme comprises a residential training wherein selected 30 trainees stay in hostels on campus. The duration of the training program is 3 months with a final assessment exam. There are no charges applied in the scheme; it is a free program organized by NISE.
