Launched in May 2008, the National Scheme of Incentives to Girls for Secondary Education is a centrally sponsored scheme that operates to proffer incentives to girl students in the age group of 14–18 years and enrolled in class 9th. The scheme has now been incorporated on National Scholarship Portal.

Objectives

The objectives of the National Scheme of Incentives to Girls for Secondary Education are as follows:

The scheme aims to create an environment to encourage enrolment and decrease the dropout rate of girl students, especially those belonging to SC/ST in secondary school education; additionally, the scheme also focuses on retention of girl students in school until they are 18 years old. The scheme covers all girl students who pass class 8th final exams from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya and enroll themselves in class 9th n state or union territory government and any other government-operated and local school institutes.

Eligibility

  1. The scheme includes all SC/ST girl students who have passed class 8th final examination and all-girl students passing the exams from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya
  2. While applying for the scheme, the girl students should be less than 16 years of age and enroll in class 9th.
  3. The scheme also encompasses married girl students, those studying in private unaided schools, and those enrolled in schools operated by the central government of India.

Benefits

Under this scheme, for every girl child term/fixed deposit is opened in a public sector bank or a post office wherein Rs. 3000 is deposited. The period of the deposit if from the date of opening to the date the girl becomes a minimum 18 years old.
