Water bodies are what keep us going as we are an agrarian economy and most of our GDP comes from agriculture. This calls in for more in-depth knowledge about all water bodies in the nation. Every Pond, canal, and pine needs to be on the map and should be under the radar for renovation so that they can be used in an optimized manner.
About the Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan
The Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan is a government scheme that aims to deal with irrigational problems and find solutions to such problems. Trenches would be constructed for irrigation along with ponds.
What does the scheme offer?
The scheme aims to provide services such as 20×20 meter ponds constructed and the department will provide a 90 percent grant to farmers on pond construction. The department implementing this scheme would be the Department of Agriculture which works at the grassroot level with districts and rural areas where facilities are hard to come by.
The scheme provides Rs 75,000 subsidy to any farmer who plans to construct a pond in one acre of land. If the land is available to the farmer, then she or he can build a pond. If they do not, then two to four farmers can get together to construct a pond on one acre of land.
Objectives of the scheme:
- to make all public water harvesting structures absolutely encroachment free
- marking and renovating all public wells
- Construction of check dams and other water harvesting structures in small rivers, drains, and water storage areas of hilly areas.
Preservation and better handling of water bodies have been of vital importance to the Indian government, and the Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan is just a massive step in establishing better agrarian practices.
