The Central government of India has decided to pay attention to environmental causes and has therefore launched the Tree Plantation Campaign or the Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2020. This is to align India with the PM’s ideology of Atmanirbhar Bharat and to move the nation towards zero import of coal.

About the Tree Plantation Campaign

  1. The Vriksharopan Abhiyan is organized by the Ministry of Coal involving all coal and Lignite PSUs. During these PSUs, large scale plantations would be undertaken in mines, colonies and offices and other suitable areas
  2. The Vriksharopan Abhiyan was conducted at more than 130 locations and spread across 38 districts of 10 coal/lignite bearing states. This was done through video conferencing, considering the need to stay indoors as much as possible due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  3. The coal and lignite PSUs have planned to plant over 40 lakh saplings covering a space of 1,789 hectares of land. Cost estimate stands to be ₹70 crores in the current fiscal year.

Implementation of the Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2020

This scheme has been implemented to conserve and protect the environment for which 6 lakh seedlings are being planted across 600 acres in 38 districts of 10 states – all of this just at the launch of the Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2020. An additional 5 lakh seedlings would be distributed to the local people on the occasion and the total cost involved in the 5 eco-parks and 1 sal Plantation project is estimated to be ₹27.60 crores.

Summing it up

The Government of India has recently launched a Self-sustaining scheme under which the government aims to drive the nation to a much more self-sustaining future. Plantation activities as these do put us on the radar for being eco-friendly as a country.
