The Smart City Mission was launched by The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs in the year 2015. The aim of this mission lies in the ideals of institutional, physical, economical and social development of a city and consequently its people. The core areas of focus according to this initiative are steady electric supply, good waste management, IT laden operations and connections, sustainable development of the environment, safety and security, public transport and traffic management, health, and education. Hence this ideal would be successful with the economic upliftment, improvement in the quality of life, and inclusive development.

According to the mission, the 4 main plans for development are city improvement by Retrofitting process, city renewal by the Redevelopment process, Inclusive housing for the poor in the vacant area through the Greenfield development process, and smart city solutions implementation through the Pan-city development process.
