Smart City Mission

The Smart City Mission was launched by The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs in the year 2015. The aim of this mission lies in the ideals of institutional, physical, economical and social development of a city and consequently its people. The core areas of focus according to this initiative are steady electric supply, good waste management, IT laden operations and connections, sustainable development of the environment, safety and security, public transport and traffic management, health, and education. Hence this ideal would be successful with the economic upliftment, improvement in the quality of life, and inclusive development.

According to the mission, the 4 main plans for development are city improvement by Retrofitting process, city renewal by the Redevelopment process, Inclusive housing for the poor in the vacant area through the Greenfield development process, and smart city solutions implementation through the Pan-city development process.

Implementation & Other Details

• Initially, 100 cities were selected to start working on this mission.
• The selection was done by the Ministry of Urban Development, Expert Committee, Apex Committee through screening, assessment, and review processes.
• The national level monitoring of the mission would be done by the Apex Committee and National Mission Directorate.
• Public private partnerships would be also resorted to as a way of implementing this mission.
• 500 acres of land would be used for retrofitting, 50 acres for redevelopment, and more than 250 acres of vacant land would be used for Greenfield development.
• The Government of India had allocated Rs.6,450 crore especially for Smart City Mission in the year 2019.
• At present, 5151 projects under this mission are already being implemented.
