In the wake of Women empowerment, Maharashtra Government launched the Asmita scheme for women and girls. Under this scheme, the government aims to provide sanitary pads at extremely subsidized prices.

The meaning of the word “Asmita” is Pride, and through this scheme, the state government aims to dignify women with a sense of pride and not feel ashamed or embarrassed under the societal notions that surround something so anatomically natural to a woman.

Scheme details

The Asmita Scheme launched by the Maharashtra Government will provide 8 small sanitary pads at just ₹ 24 and larger sized pads at ₹ 29. This pricing makes it really affordable to classes whose financial status is not all that great. The government has taken this initiative to emphasize on the fact that the financial spectrum of the masses should not hinder with personal hygiene.

Subsequently, this scheme will provide sanitary pads to girls studying in Zilla Parishad schools at ₹ 5.

In order to streamline and better execute the distribution of pads in rural areas, the government will also launch an app. As per the strategies laid down by the scheme, if all goes as per plan, we can expect a drastic drop in the number of dropouts among schoolgirls.

How will the government execute it?

For a state with a population of 11.42 crores, reaching out to the woman population is a humongous undertaking. In order to channelize this better, the government plans on implementing this with the help of Women’s self-help groups.

The root objective of the Asmita scheme is to increase the percentage of women using sanitary pads. Currently, the percentage of women using sanitary pads stands at a meager 17%. A leading cause of young girls not going to school and missing out on education is the lack of availability of resources during the menstrual days.

In conclusion

The government tries to tackle as many issues in as lucrative a manner as possible. This initiative by the Government stands testimonial to its service towards people.
