Safe and usable water is a basic human right, and every household is entitled to receive safe drinking water. This remains to be non-negotiable and governments over the years have persistently tried to bring water connection to households far and wide, and regardless of how steep the task seems to be, state and central governments have been at it for decades now, relentlessly bringing more households under the umbrella of a steady water connection.
To accelerate the governmental efforts and to go at the issue with renewed rigour, the government of India launched the Har Ghar Nal yojana in Uttar Pradesh – which means Every Household gets a faucet.
Need for the scheme
The scheme has already been launched for around 3,000 households in the Mirzapur and Sonbhadra region of Uttar Pradesh and at the moment, the overall cost estimate of the scheme implementation stands to be ₹5,555 crores.
The main goal of the scheme implementation stands to be providing water to over 41 lakh villagers residing in two districts of Uttar Pradesh who have constantly faced water shortage issues for years now.
Water being a basic source of sustenance for all humankind, implementation of the scheme becomes more important than anything else so that the poor and marginalized people from the rural areas of Uttar Pradesh finally have some means or ways of procuring safe drinking water.
Benefits under the Har Ghar Nal Yojana 2020
The benefits under the scheme seem to be many, however, here are some of the main benefits:
- The scheme will offer people clean drinking water at home, and no longer have them travel miles to get access to clean water – which is actually a basic human right.
- The water problem in the areas of Uttar Pradesh constantly battling water shortage will finally see an end.
- The Har Ghar Nal Yojana will be launched under the Jal Jeevan Mission and this will provide water to people of around 3000 villages.
Work has already begun as pipelines have been laid across the Jhansi, Lalitpur, and Mahoba districts of the Bundelkhand region.
The scheme aims to connect over 1300 villages of Sonbhadra with a steady water connection and over 19,53,458 families will get to benefit from it.
Implementation of the scheme
To implement the scheme efficiently, the Jal Shakti Ministry has been formed which includes resources from the Ministry of Water, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation along with the Ministry of Drinking water and sanitation. With so many elite departments in the mix, a well-funded scheme will surely see fruition in a relatively shorter span of time, thereby allowing people decent access to water much sooner.
