Covid-19 has indeed compelled people to come up with innovative solutions where not only are people helped, but help is provided with due diligence to social distancing norms. While the central government announced free ration for ration card holders for several months, there would often be people crowding Ration shops, not wanting to miss out on the free ration offered – after all these are dire times and the ration is essentiality.

In order to solve the problem of people crowding outside ration shops and putting themselves at risk of contracting Covid-19, and to also provide ration for people who need it the most, the government of Delhi came up with a unique solution which has now been rolled out as a government scheme – Delhi Mukhyamantri Ghar Ghar Ration Yojana.

What is the Mukhyamantri Ghar Ghar Ration yojana?

The scheme essentially ensures the home delivery of ration. The prime objective of the scheme is to ensure that no poor person in the NCT of Delhi is left deprived of the subsidized ration offered by the government of India.

According to the scheme’s implementation, wheat, flour, rice and sugar are delivered home in packed bags and the deliveries are made with social distancing protocols followed.

This doorstep ration delivery is expected to be rolled out in the next two to three months. Moreover, availing subsidized ration from the Public Distribution System (PDS) shop will now be optional in Delhi.

How will the ration reach households under this scheme?

CM of Delhi mentioned that the wheat would be taken from FCI Warehouse for grinding and then it would be packed and sent to several ration card holder’s addresses. Other essential items like rice, sugar would also be packed and sent. After the packing is complete, a facilitator would be in charge of delivering the ration at the home of the ration card holder.

Ration Home delivery Implementation status

The implementation of the Home Delivery of Ration will start in the next few months. The scheme will ensure that the poor people of Delhi get to avail of the services rightfully designed for them in a dignified manner.

In the last couple of months, even with lockdown restrictions, people often were seen crowding outside PDS shops for availing free ration. This got them exposed to higher risks of contracting the disease, for which the lockdown restrictions were imposed in the first place.

Considering how counterproductive the public service of providing free ration was turning out eventually, the CM of Delhi announced the Ghar Ghar ration yojana. The logistics of carrying out the said yojana still stands to be confirmed and further details will be provided soon.

Summing it up
