With education getting onto a new platform, learning has now leaped out of the four walls of a mere classroom. To learn is to now sit in the comfort of your house in front of your smart devices, while your teacher might be seated thousands of miles away. This is the future of teaching and learning, and though it has come to the limelight under trying circumstances, it is noteworthy how students have taken to learning digitally.

And while the option of learning online seems to be one that’s too good to be true, it might not be everyone’s reality. There are families in certain parts of India that find it difficult to barely get the food on the table, much less afford a smart device with a sound internet connection to enable students to continue with their academics.

The Gujarat government has taken notice of the issues springing up due to the sudden digitization of the academic system and is implementing evasive measures. An attempt to do the same happens to be the Namo E-tab scheme.

What is the Namo e-tab scheme about?

The Namo e-tab is a portal for youngsters to enroll themselves so that they could find avenues to carry on their academics through government-funded tablet devices. In the recent budget announced for 2020-21, the state government of Gujarat has earmarked ₹252 crores for the distribution of tablet devices for students. The scheme is ideally made to offer high-end specification tablets to around three lakh meritorious students so as to assist them in their higher education.

The tablets offered to students would be from manufacturing companies like Acer, Lenovo. Students would have to register themselves for the scheme, in order to avail the benefits.

To go ahead with the registration, the student would have to deposit ₹1000/- and this amount is to be deposited at the institute or college where the student has taken admission.

Eligibility criteria to avail the tablet

In order to be eligible for the scheme, the student would have to adhere to the following criteria:

  1. The student must be a permanent resident of Gujarat
  2. She/he must have secured merit in 12th grade
  3. The applicant must be taking admission in 1st year in college or a polytechnic course.

Tab Specifications

The tabs offered to students would be decked with the latest tech and would be well-equipped to deal with academic rigour. These tabs would hail either from Acer or Lenovo. It would be a 7-inch display, with a 1.3 GHz Quad-core processor with 2GB RAM and either 16GB/64GB internal expandable Micro SD storage.

It would have a battery capacity of 3450mAh and would be supporting 4G with voice calling. It would have a 5MP rear and 2MP front camera with Android 7 update out of the box.

Summing it up

In the end, the whole deal is to allow students to get to their studies more efficiently. In an e-learning sphere, equipping students with the right tech is equivalent to giving wings to spirited hearts, who will soon soar to the heights of success.
