The Prime Minister of India has, taking the plight of farmers in Gujarat into consideration, launched the Gujarat Kisan Suryoday Yojana which will earmark a specific amount and dedicate it towards the welfare of poor farmers in the state.
About the Kisan Suryoday Yojana
Under the scheme, the government will spend ₹3500 crores over the span of three years in order to provide solar power to farmers for irrigation purposes during the daytime.
With the use of solar energy, farmers will now cut down on electricity bills incurred, thereby minimizing their expenses and maximizing their outputs. This scheme aims to provide free electricity to farmers for 16 hours a day – from 5 am to 9 pm. This would help farmers help expand their micro-irrigation range in the state and lead to better outcomes in the long run.
Not only will this scheme be an eco-friendly one as it provides solar energy to farmers, but it would also help in water conservation. Up until now, farmers would be getting electricity in the night, so they would switch on their motor pumps and leave them on all night. However, with this daytime electricity, huge amounts of water can now be saved.
Implementation of the scheme
The State government of Gujarat will allocate a budget of ₹3500 crores for installing the infrastructure needed to transmit energy. Under this scheme, roughly about 3500 circuit kilometers of new transmission lines will be set up all across the state in the span of the next three years. This will be implemented across villages and rural areas, wherever agrarian practices are undertaken.
